The Punta Cana Macao Energy Consortium (CEPM), the San Pedro de Macorís Electricity Company (Energas), Grupo Universal, Empresa Generadora de Electricidad Itabo (EgeItabo) and the Dominican Mining Corporation (Cormidom), announced a major contribution to environmental conservation. The companies are joining forces with the Desde El Medio Foundation for the signage and electrification of the Armando Bermúdez and José del Carmen Ramírez National Parks. The largest peaks in the Caribbean are located in these national parks, including Pico Duarte.
An estimated 10,000 Dominicans and tourists regularly visit the parks. The contribution will allow for better working and living conditions for the park rangers.
CEPM, Energas and EgeItabo are electricity generation companies. Grupo Universal is an insurance company. Cormidom is a Dominican company that is a branch of the Australian mining firm, Perilya. It has the Cerro de Maimón concession, a 2,245-hectare mining area, where it operates an open-pit copper and zinc mine with an approximate reserve of six million tons of gold and copper. The concession was acquired from Falconbridge Dominicana in April 2002.
