The Presidential Health Cabinet, chaired by the Vice President Raquel Peña, announced last week that there would be a third round of vaccinations as part of the administration’s efforts to contain the coronavirus pandemic in the country.
Dominicans were prompt to respond in favor and against. The Dominican Medical Association (CMD) is in favor. Other experts feel that perhaps, down the line, a booster type of vaccine dose might be needed, but, again, it is not known. The Dominican Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery recommended that health authorities complete the present two dose vaccination schedule and await guidelines based on scientific studies and approved by the governing bodies on the application of a third dose. The Dominican Society of Infectious Diseases says it does not oppose the population getting a third dose of Covid-19 vaccine as a booster. The Dominican Society of Pediatricians is strongly against arguing there are no studies that validate the use of a third vaccination.
With only 24% of the world’s population having received vaccination, some 2.8 billion persons, it is only now that studies are beginning to be carried out as to the efficiency of the vaccines, and the possible combination of vaccines from different companies and countries.
Others in the country are concerned there have already been deaths of persons who had received the full dose of Sinovac, the vaccine with which almost 90% of Dominicans have been inoculated. The booster shot would increase the immunity of most of the population, especially in the case of the new variants said to be behind the new outbreak in the Dominican Republic. The Covid-19 bulletin numbers show the new restrictive measures have been successful in containing the outbreak.
Internationally, the media abroad is abuzz with articles on the pros or cons of the third vaccination.
