President Luis Abinader declared Monday, 5 July 2021, a day of official mourning for the death of politician Tirso Mejía Ricart on Saturday, 3 July 2021. Decree 420-21 orders the flag to fly at half-mast in military precincts and all public buildings. Mejía Ricart was a medical doctor. He was 85 years old and died of Covid-19 complications.
Mejía Ricart served as a deputy in Congress for the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) and is known as responsible for the law that split the province of Santo Domingo and the National District into the National District and four municipalities in the Santo Domingo province. He was a founding member of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).
