Abinader: Curfew could be behind us by August

President Luis Abinader had one good news to tell and one bad when addressing the people on TV on 7 July 2021 from the Presidential Palace. He announced a gradual elimination of curfew, and then he told Dominicans that we have to learn to live with the virus.

Abinader announced the count down to the end of curfew restrictions in the Dominican Republic. He said as of Wednesday, 7 July through Tuesday, 13 July, curfew will be Monday to Friday 10pm to 5am, and 7pm to 5am on Saturdays and Sundays. Every day, people will have a two-hour free transit period.

As of Wednesday, 14 July to Tuesday, 20 July, curfew will be Monday to Friday 11pm to 5am, and 9pm to 5am on Saturdays and Sundays. Again, with the two-hour free transit.

For the restaurant and bar businesses, the best news is that as of Wednesday, 14 July, the sale of alcoholic beverages will be allowed until curfew time.

Starting, Wednesday, 21 July, curfew will be unified from Monday to Sunday 11pm, with two hours of free transit.

“From that moment on, we will be opening and eliminating the curfew in each province that reaches 70% of its population vaccinated with the two doses,” said the President during a press conference on Wednesday evening.

Abinader forecast that La Altagracia (Punta Cana), Espaillat (Moca) and Puerto Plata, as well as the National District are likely to make the cut for the elimination of curfew if the pace of vaccinations against Covid-19 continues. As of 6 July, 5,097,374 Dominicans had received at least a first dose, and 3,299,075 had received two doses.

In his speech, the governor warned everyone has to have very clear that the new variants of the disease are circulating. He admonished that given the international situation, “we are going to have to learn to live with Covid-19, because it is not going to disappear in the short term.”

“We must continue to be responsible and take care of ourselves personally in order to take care of others,” he concluded.
