JCE: PRD and FP get majority party status

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) announced on 8 July 2021 that it accepts the Superior Administrative Court (TSA) ruling that redefines the criteria to be used to allocate taxpayer funds to political parties. The TSA ordered the JCE to accept the highest vote obtained by a political party in any of the presidential, congressional or municipal levels during the 5 July 2020 elections. The decision awards majority party status to the FP and PRD.

The JCE issued resolution 014-2021 that orders that 80% of the funds for the political parties to be distributed equally among the Modern Revolutionary (PRM), the Dominican Liberation (PLD) and now the People’s Force (FP) and Dominican Revolutionary (PRD) parties. The political parties each had obtained more than 5% of the votes in at least one of the three elections for president, legislators and city government officers.

The JCE ruling also provides that the parties that will receive an equal share of the 12% resource allocation will be those that obtained less than 5% of votes in the elections — Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC), which obtained 4.09 %; Alianza País, which obtained 1.77 %, the PUN, with 1.41 %; Dominicanos por el Cambio (DxC), 1.24 %; the BIS, which obtained 1.23 %; the Humanista Dominicano (PHD), with 1.08 % and the Comunista Revolucionario (PCR), which obtained 1.01 %.

The remaining 8% will be distributed among the organizations that obtained less than 1% and more than 0.01% of the votes, such as PRSD, Moda, Frente Amplio, APD, PP, PLR, PPC, PQDC, UDC, PAL, FNP, PRI, PDP, PNVC and PDI.

The funds to be delivered correspond to the July-December period of this year, but the amounts will be determined by the plenary of the JCE, by means of a subsequent decision.

The Political Committee of the PLD announced that it will appeal the sentence of the TSA before the Supreme Court of Justice.
