Merchants claim millionaire losses due to closed land border

Border merchants complain they are losing millions now that the Dominican government closed the main crossing points on the border with Haiti and shutdown the binational markets. Laureano Santana a Dajabón merchant said just in egg sales the losses are of RD$2 million per day, as reported in El Dia. The vendors stress that eggs are perishable goods. The Dominican government shut down the official land borders after the murder of Haitian President Jovenel Moise on 7 July 2021.

Dominican vendors are losing millions, while Haitians need to pay a premium for goods that are now being sent through unofficial crossing points at a higher cost.

“This situation could get worse because the Haitians who are in their country could retaliate against the Dominican territory, because they do not have access to food by land”, according to Carlos Morillo, president of the Federation of Traders of Dajabón told El Dia.
