
Thousands of pigs will be slaughtered to fight the spread of African Swine Fever in Sanchez Ramirez province. The Ministry of Agriculture announced the elimination of about 17,000 pigs that are housed in backyard pigsties, that are infected with swine disease.
The consumption of pork by humans is not considered to be harmful.
As a result of this outbreak, President Abinader ordered his Minister of Agriculture, Limber Cruz Lopez to meet with technicians and the local pork producers to help mitigate the economic losses of producers. The Official Commission for the Control and Eradication of African Swine Fever Outbreaks says the government will pay the current market price for the pigs slaughtered in Sánchez Ramírez. Payments will be made through the Agricultural Bank (Banco Agrícola), within 12 to 15 days.
