As reported in Haiti Libre, on Saturday 31 July 2021, the former Commissioner of the Government of Port-au-Prince Claude Gassant was found dead in his residence in Arroyo Hondo in northern Santo Domingo. He lived there with his family. Initially it has been said that Gassant “would have committed suicide.” However, Haiti Libre report says “the circumstances surrounding Gassant’s death do not seem clear.”
The corpse was sent for an autopsy and agents from the National Investigation Department (DNI) are investigating whether he committed suicide or was murdered. At least four people were arrested for questioning, including the wife and a neighbor of Gassant.
Claude Gassant had investigated the assassination of the former director of Radio Haiti Inter, Jean Léopold Dominique. He had been Secretary of State for Justice under the Préval Government, Consul of Haiti in Santiago and former director general of the Anti-Corruption Unit (2019-2020) during the mandate of President Jovenel Moise.
Ana Jimenez Cruceta, National Police spokeswoman says the Homicide Department of the institution is investigating the death of Gassant and that they are waiting for the results of the autopsy.
