Graduates of government-sponsored teacher-training programs not eligible to apply for public teacher jobs

In what must be one of the most highly frustrating announcements of recent weeks, the Deputy Minister of Education, Rafael Alcantara told reporters that the graduates of many of the government-sponsored teacher training programs in different universities will not be eligible to compete in the application process to choose 15,000 new teachers for Dominican public schools for the 2021-2022 school year.

The application process closed last week and these graduates of the “Teachers for Excellence” program were not accepted because of restrictions specified in the Ministry of Education Resolution 16-21. Representatives from at least one university (INTEC) said that they had signed contracts for the scholarships and were disappointed at the negativity on the part of the ministry.

Apparently, many of the graduates had not yet gone through the process of having their degrees “legalized” or certified by the Ministry of Higher Education, and in other cases the university where they graduated had not officially issued the degree. There are well over 72,000 hopefuls for the 15,000 positions.
