
The 14 provinces of the Cibao, and especially the central area of Santiago, Espaillat and La Vega have been hit hard by a series of recent long blackouts. Blackouts in recent years have been rare, but this past week they have returned with a vengeance. Ten, 12-hour blackouts have prevailed for the past 48 hours, making even the most mundane chores seem impossible. The electricity distribution company, EdeNorte, has issued tweets saying that all these interruptions are because of “interconnections” with circuits in the area of Bonao. The government explains the efforts are underway to double the electricity transport capacity.
