Dominican athletes to the Tokyo Olympics delivered five medals, a new record for the Dominican Republic’s Olympic Game participation. Since the country began competing in the Tokyo Games in 1964, Dominican athletes have won 12 Olympic medals.
In Tokyo 2020, the DR ranked 68th overall and 42nd in the number of total medals.
The first to medal in Tokyo 2020 was Zacarias Bonnat who won silver in the 81 kilos category in weightlifting on 31 July 2021. Next on 2 August, was the bronze won by weightlifter Crismery Santana (-87 kg).
The Dominican 4 x 400m mixed relay turned in a silver medal on 31 July — Lidio Andres Feliz, Marileidy Paulino, Anabel Medina, and Alexander Ogando (3:10:21). Luguelín Santos, winner of a silver medal in 400m in the London 2012 Olympics, ran in the semi-final for the Dominican team.
Dominican runner Marileidy Paulino clocked 49.2 to grab the silver in women’s 400 m on 6 August 2021.
And the last medal was that of the Dominican baseball team, that brought home the bronze, after defeating defending champions South Korea 10-6 on 7 August, the last day of competitions for the Dominican athletes. The bronze medal in baseball is the first Olympic medal for a team sport in Dominican sports history.
President Luis Abinader tweeted his congratulations to all the Dominican team members, especially the medal winners. An event is programmed for the President to congratulate the winners at the Presidential Palace personally.
Most of the remaining Dominican athletes are returning on Tuesday, 10 August to the country. A first welcome was organized for weightlifters Zacarias Bonnat and Crismery Santana that returned last week.
