Market in Dajabon was lively on Friday

The Dajabon market day on the border with Haiti was especially lively this past Friday, 6 August 2021. Binational markets are held every Monday and Friday in several cities along the Haitian border. According to newspaper accounts there was a “massive” participation of Haitians in the market, and lots of Dominicans also flocked to the plaza to find clothing and other interesting items.

Just one number shows how important these bi-national markets really are. Each month the Dominican Republic sells RD$150 million through these markets.

The head of the local retailers told Diario Libre that things are picking up after the hiatus caused by the political unrest following the assassination of President Moïse, followed by the rioting that accompanied the presidential funeral.

One issue that was observed was the lack of proper sanitary protocols such as social distancing and the wearing of face masks. According to sources, there was also a strict military presence in the area and all along the border.
