
A nurse died on Tuesday, 10 August 2021 in the evening from inhaling smoke in a fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon at the Canela 2 Clinic, on Padre Abreu Avenue in La Romana.
Jeovanny de los Remedios Hernandez had survived the fire in critical condition. 26 people were admitted to the Canela 1 Clinic, due to fainting and smoke inhalation.
The fire started on the first level of the hospital. Patients, health personnel and visitors were evacuated.
At least seven units of the La Romana Fire Department, the Caleta municipal district, the Central Romana company, as well as members of the Civil Defense, the Red Cross and the National Police, participated in the rescue of the patients and in extinguishing of the fire.
The General Intendant of the La Romana Fire Department, Colonel Medardo Antonio Quezada (Tony), said tthe technical department is investigating the possible causes of the fire.
