The Ministry of Agriculture announced that it has compensated 42 small pig farmers with RD$8.4 million. The farmers slaughtered 1,032 pigs in northwestern Santiago Rodriguez. The Ministry says the compensated farmers were paid for the slaughtered pigs according to market prices. The payments are part of the Contingency Plan for the Eradication of African Swine Fever that the government is implementing to stop the spread of the virus. The virus only spreads among pigs. The payments are being made to discourage farmers from hiding the pigs.
The Minister of Agriculture, Limber Cruz, said that the agricultural sector is working to protect the genetic nuclei and offer the population a new and improved repopulation of pigs, once the virus is eradicated in the country.
He added that the government will provide the necessary support to pig farmers who want to engage in other agricultural activities.
The delivery of checks was held at the Santiago Rodríguez Provincial Governor’s Office and the Minister of Agriculture was accompanied by the administrator of the Agricultural Bank, Fernando Durán; Governor Delis Almonte; the mayor of the municipality of Sabaneta, Félix Martes, and Congressman Nicolás López.
