
The Dominican Republic beat host team Mexico 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-22) to win a fifth U23 Women’s Pan American Championship. The tournament held in Aguascalientes, Mexico ended on Sunday night, 15 August 2021. The DR, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Suriname qualified for the Cali 2021 Junior Pan American Games (25 Nov-5 Dec 2021). Competing teams were Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Suriname and Trinidad & Tobago.
In the Aguascalientes tournament, Madeline Guillén scored a tournament high of 22 points, on 18 attacks and four blocks to help the Dominican Republic finish with perfect mark and retain the championship for the fifth time, the same number of editions of the event. Guillén won the most valuable player trophy for the event.
Norceca reported that the Dominican Republic’s most vital skill was the team’s blocking, subduing Mexico with an impressive 16-9 advantage. Mexico held a one-point advantage in attacks (33-32); both teams scored one ace. Dominicans limited their unforced errors to 18 points in comparison to 26 from the Mexican side.
