Guillermo Moreno: Is the PRM government more of the same?

Guillermo Moreno, president of Alianza Pais, in an opinion piece in Diario Libre on 23 August 2021, observes the dilemma of a government that seeks to present itself as the government of change while continuing many of the same odious practices of the past administration.

Moreno mentions the excessive use of propaganda and the turning government into entertainment with something “new” for the media. He criticizes the President is the omnipresent face of the government, displacing ministers.

“The President is trapped in a dilemma: he speaks, promises and announces a change and yet his government reproduces the continuity of inherited policies and practices,” writes Moreno.

Moreno praises the success of the vaccination campaign. But he asks for an explanation as to why the government has purchased more than 25 million vaccination doses. He questions why the Dominican government paid US$19 per Sinovac vaccine at the same time Chile was paying for these US$11.50. He criticizes the abandoning of primary care and prevention actions while all the focus is on Covid-19.

He has praise for the appreciation of the Dominican peso, the increase in international reserves and the recovery of jobs and the reactivation of the tourism and free zone sectors.

He is critical of the excessive borrowing, with more than US$12 billion borrowed, or around US$1 billion per month during the first year of government.
