Public Health zooms in on provinces with low vaccination rates to fight Covid-19 spread

Public Health Minister Daniel Rivera said over the weekend that the government is intensifying efforts in 13 provinces where the percentage of vaccinated persons is below the national average. These provinces include the minister’s hometown of Santiago and San Cristóbal, the third most populated province in the country. La Vega and the province of Santo Domingo are also the focus of intensified vaccination efforts on behalf of the government.

Dr. Rivera had defended the extension of the National State of Emergency. The state of exception will be maintained through 11 October 2021 as established in Decree 528-21 published over the weekend.

The Health Cabinet advocates removing curfew in a province when 70% of the population has at least two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine. The government has said that it will consider removing the curfew in provinces where 70% of the population is fully vaccinated. So far, only the National District and La Altagracia have met the criteria. On the other hand, Dr. Rivera expects Espaillat (Moca) and Pedernales to be the next provinces where curfew may be removed.

On Friday, 27 August 2021, the Health Cabinet announced the arrival of new batches of AstraZeneca (184,800 doses) and Pfizer (572,680) vaccines. On Sunday, 29 August a batch of 2 million Sinovac/Coronavac vaccines was received. The Dominican Republic has received more than 21 million vaccine doses and applied 11,070,842 doses, as of 28 August 2021. 4,628,273 persons have received the full dose of vaccine of a population of 10.8 million.
