Checks purge produces RD$7.5 million in unclaimed pay

Hundreds of government employees did not show up to collect their wages in July. The ploy by the National Treasury that sought to purge payrolls resulted in a bonanza of RD$7.5 million returned in July 2021 to the National Treasury by 13 institutions that paid their employees in that month by check. The employees had to physically show up to get paid. Previously, the government entities had transfered the sums to the beneficiary account via internet banking.

A press release from the National Treasury explains that the Ministry of Environment alone returned 277 checks for RD$3,937,746 that were not claimed. The Ministry of Sports returned 134 checks for which no one showed. The Ministry of Interior & Police had no shows for 22 checks and savings of RD$466,276.

Even the Comptroller General’s Office reported 13 unclaimed checks for RD$408,207.16.
