Pandemic sent banks and people into digital-land

In the Dominican Republic, some 45% of all banking transactions are now digital. Today there is very little that a person can do at a bank that cannot be done online. Payrolls are paid online and workers have been assigned debit cards to access their deposits.

Even the most conservative in the financial sector, the savings and loans entities are getting on board the digital train, and now over 16% of their transactions are carried out online.

The pandemic accelerated plans already underway to promote internet banking. The long lines at understaffed bank offices encouraged people to do their banking online. And banks have worked overtime to deliver more services online.

For years, ATMs have been scattered around the country, but now, if you really have to go to a bank in person, you can get a number even before you reach the bank. The intention is that there be less waiting and quicker service as well as less exposure to Covid-19.
