Former Vice President Margarita Cedeño announces she seeks Presidency in 2024

56-year old Margarita Cedeño, who was First Lady for eight years (Leonel Fernandez 2004-2012) and Vice President with former President Danilo Medina (2012-2020), has announced she will seek the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) nomination in 2024. Others of the PLD to announce their aspirations are Abel Martínez, a former president of the Chamber of Deputies and two-term mayor of Santiago, and former Santiago senator and Attorney General Francisco Domínguez Brito.

Cedeño campaigned criticizing the deteriorating of public services, the improvisation and lack of jobs and the lack of opportunities for young people in the country. She said she would serve with efficiency and solidarity. Cedeño managed billionaire budgets for welfare as First Lady and Vice President. She is a graduate of the state UASD law school with postgraduate studies abroad.

Cedeño no longer uses the traditional “de Fernandez.” The couple, nevertheless, has never formally announced they are divorced. In the 2020 presidential election campaign, Cedeño competed against Leonel Fernandez after being chosen running mate to then PLD presidential candidate Gonzalo Castillo. Fernandez ran for the newly created People’s Force after disputing the legality of the electoral primary of the PLD that chose Castillo as presidential candidate.
