President Luis Abinader was present for the inauguration of a new 12,500m2 industrial building at Gerdau Metaldom, a major steelwork plant outside the National District. The company invested RD$900 million in the new industrial facility that is located in the Duarte Industrial Park.
Speaking at the event, President Abinader highlighted that the Social Security Treasury (TSS) records reveal that there are now 1,526,630 formal jobs registered with the government. He said this is 8,000 more jobs than registered in February 2020, the last month before the pandemic with over 8,000 jobs.
“We have surpassed the number of pre-Covid jobs, which was one of the main objectives of the government,” said Abinader. The President stressed that any project that creates jobs will have the support of his administration.
President Abinader also shared the news that the demand on the electricity grid has surpassed 3,100 megawatts on 27 September, a new record. The head of state said this also reflects the great economic activity and at the same time the many challenges. He acknowledged that to the extent that demand grows, to that same extent the supply must increase. “That is what we are planning for from the government, so that the supply also grows on a par with the demand. Ours iis an economy that is growing, it is an economy that is creating jobs and the public and economic policies of the government are giving the expected results,” said the President.
Abinader congratulated Metaldom for the expansion, which he said not only serves the Dominican market, but also exports to the Caribbean and Central America.
