When interviewed, the director of the Land Transit and Safety Agency (Digesett), Ramon Antonio Guzmán Peralta said that traffic jams happen only at peak times. “Traffic jams per se do not exist, because that is what we are for, to move traffic.” That set off a wave of frustrated drivers who spend hours in traffic jams when trying to navigate the short distances in Greater Santo Domingo.
#Reportatutapon became a trending topic on Twitter.
In recent years, the number of vehicles in the Dominican Republic has continued to increase, from 1.9 million in 2006 to 4.8 million in 2020, according to the records of the Tax Agency (DGII). Most of these vehicles circulate in Greater Santo Domingo. The number of vehicles has increased primarily due to aggressive marketing of low interest loans in car fairs promoted by commercial banks, including the government BanReservas. While at a time the vehicles served as an alternative to deficient public transportation, todays constant traffic jams oblige people to spend hours in traffic instead of at productive tasks.
