
The Central Electoral Board (JCE) ordered politicians to cease promoting their political aspirations immediately. The JCE says that Political Parties Law 33-18 and Electoral Regime Law 15-19. The JCE says that the pre-campaign and campaign periods for the 2024 general elections have not yet begun.
The JCE warns:
Law No. 33-18 of Political Parties, Groupings and Movements, establishes penalties for the beginning of pre-campaigns and electoral campaigns at the wrong time. The law in its article 78 numeral 8, states the following: “Sanctions. The parties, groupings and political movements or any other natural or juridical person, public or private, without prejudice of the other laws applicable to them, who incur in the violations indicated in the present law, shall be subject to the following sanctions: 8) The aspirants who begin their campaign before the official campaign or pre-campaign time shall be sanctioned with the inadmissibility of the candidacy. The Central Electoral Board shall be responsible for enforcing this provision.”
In the Dominican Republic, several politicians are openly on the campaign trail including former President Leonel Fernandez of the People’s Force. Also former First Lady and Vice President Margarita Cedeño for the PLD, Santiago Mayor Abel Martinez, and former Attorney General and Minister of Environment Francisco Dominguez Brito for the PLD. President Luis Abinader is expected to seek reelection in the 2024 campaign and has given continuity to his 2020 presidential campaign that promised “change” in the Presidency propaganda.
