30 years for those who disfigured Yocairi Amarante

The Third Collegiate Court of the National District ruled 30 years in prison to the three men prosecuted for attacking 19-year old Yocairi Amarante and causing permanent damage to her face and body with devil’s acid on 27 September 2020. Amarante lost vision in her right eye, more than 50% of the vision in her left eye, and her right nipple. Hypertrophic scars caused by the acid run down her neck, chest, breasts, arms, and legs.

Willy Antonio Javier Monegro, main accused and former spouse of the victim; Pedro Alexander Sosa Mendez and Joan Jose Feliz, were convicted of causing severe burns to the young woman in different parts of her body.

Attorney General Miriam German had instructed the prosecutors to treat the assault with devil’s acid as an act of torture and barbarism.

Judges Arlín Ventura, Milagros Ramírez and Leticia Martínez sent the accused to serve the sentence at the 15 de Azua jail.

Prosecutors revealed that Javier Monegro had contracted the job paying RD$25,000 to the accomplices that disfigured the young woman.

Amarante Rodríguez spoke to BuzzFeed News about the men who attacked her with acid, the recovery process, and her hopes for the future — which include opening a salon with money that influencer and singer Cardi B gifted her.
