Congressmen meet at luxury resort, but initial reports are the comfortable setting did not make them more productive

Congress paid around RD$30,000 per day per legislator to meet in a different scenario and study the around 400 articles in the amended Penal Code. News reports are that the outing cost taxpayers RD$2.5 million.

Despite the splurge, Alianza Pais deputy Jose Horacio Rodriguez says that the most controversial issues were not tackled. Little advances were made, despite the high cost of the stay at a resort in La Romana.

Raful said that instead, the legislators agreed during the stay at the resort to eliminate the expiration of corruption, reduce penalties in cases of gender and domestic violence, eliminate the penalizing of verbal violence and the aggravating circumstances in cases of sexual aggression.

Rodríguez and senator for the National District Faride Raful announced they would present a dissident report to the floor. “We will present a dissenting report regarding the points that we understand should have been addressed from another angle to have a code that guarantees the prevention, control and punishment of infractions, in a more effective way for our society,” tweeted Raful.

The bi-chamber committee is made up by senators and deputies:
