President Luis Abinader has filed the 2022 National Budget with Congress. It calls for RD$1,155,565,300,000 in expenditures. It is the first time that the government has dealt with a trillion-peso budget. While the 2021 Budget was increased to go over that sum, it was originally “just” RD$997 billion when it was first passed.
This new budget includes billions of pesos for major infrastructure and transportation projects in Santiago and Santo Domingo. In Santiago, the President inaugurated the construction of a monorail and cable car system as part of the effort to reduce congestion. In Santo Domingo the expansion of the Santo Domingo Metro will receive nearly RD$8.9 billion for the 2C Line from Los Alcarrizos to Luperon Avenue, the expansion of Line 1 of the Metro, Line 2 of the cable car system in West Santo Domingo and the construction of Line 2B in Santo Domingo.
This coming 2022 there will be reductions in the budget of the ministries of Industry & Commerce, Environment, Public Works, Sports, Culture, Youth and Higher Education. The budget of the Ministry of Public Health will also be less but this is primarily attributed to the reduction in the allotment for the purchase of Covid-19 vaccines.
The government is also reducing by 5.76% the budget of the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) by RD$512.9 million, compared to what was approved for 2021.
