Medical societies and the Dominican Medical Association met on 4 October 2021 with Public Health Minister Daniel Rivera and unanimously voted to vaccinate children 5 to 11 years. The government had previously authorized two doses of Pfizer vaccine for children 12 to 17 years.
Vaccination stations have already been set up in hundreds of schools nationwide to ensure that teachers and students, employees and parents get the vaccine.
The next step is for the Health Cabinet presided by Vice President Raquel Peña to accept the recommendation. The motion will be presented on Tuesday, 5 October to the Health Cabinet.
The medics also favor the use of the Sinovac/Coronavac vaccine for the younger children. This would follow the health protocol also used in Chile.
Both Pfizer and Sinovac pharmaceutical reviews say their vaccines are safe to use with children.
The Dominican Republic has a surplus of Sinovac and Pfizer vaccines.
