Dominicans found themselves without access to Facebook, Whatsapp and Instagram and all of a sudden had to use smart phones as telephones and call people instead. For around six hours, locals rediscovered the old voice technologies.
The Monday, 4 October 2021 outage is described as the largest so far, affecting 3.5 billion users worldwide. The outage also comes as Facebook contends with damaging revelations from an ex-employee. Frances Haugen appeared on the TV show “60 minutes” and revealed that she had internal documents to prove the company was aware of the harmful effects caused by its platforms and did not act on them to not affect their profits.
Haugen has filed complaints with US authorities and is now known as the Facebook whistleblower.
