
President Luis Abinader accepted the diplomatic credentials of the new ambassadors of Spain, European Union, Uruguay, Switzerland, Italy and El Salvador at the Presidential Palace on 5 October 2021. Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez was also present.
During the protocol ceremony, which took place in the Ambassadors Hall of the Presidential Palace, Abinader spoke for about three minutes with each of the ambassadors who presented their letters of credence.
Presenting credentials were:
Uruguay. Cristina Carrion, for Uruguay. Carrion had been the academic director of the Foreign Service Institute (diplomatic school) in her country.
European Union. Katja Afheldt, of German nationality, is the new head of delegation of the European Union to the Dominican Republic. She previously was the head of the European External Action Service (EEAS) Mexico, Central America and Caribbean Division.
Italy. Stefano Queirolo Palmas is the new Italian ambassador. He had served as his country’s ambassador to Denmark from 2013 to 2018. He is a career diplomat since 1986.
Switzerland. Rita Hämmerli-Weschke is the new Swiss ambassador. She had served since 2018 as head of mission of the Swiss embassy in Ecuador.
Spain. Spanish ambassador Antonio Pérez Hernández y Torra has been a career diplomat since 1981. From December 2018 until the end of 2020 he served as director of the Casa de America. Previously he was general director for Iberoamerica and the Caribbean at the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
El Salvador. Oscar Armando Toledo Soriano presented his credentials for the Central American country. From 2017 to 2020 he served as El Salvador’s ambassador to the United States. He is a career diplomat.
At the presentation ceremony, the diplomats were received with military honors and their respective national anthems.
