
Senator Antonio Taveras (PRM-Santo Domingo) says that the Chamber of Deputies-Senate committee that is studying the assets forfeiture bill is now considering restricting the scope to major crimes, such as drug trafficking, corruption, organized crime and asset laundering.
Senator Pedro Catrain of Samana presides the committee that was empowered to merge the bill presented by Antonio Taveras (PRM-Santo Domingo) and that presented by Felix Bautista (FP-San Juan de la Maguana).
El Dia reports that Extinction of Domain bills are already in effect in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Colombia, Peru, Argentina, Ecuador and Panama.
There are expectations the bill would pass in Congress this year. The bill would remedy the situation of drug traffickers that are extradited to the United States to answer to drug trafficking charges get short sentences and then return to the Dominican Republic to enjoy their wealth.
