Ministry of Public Health backs lifestyle changes for better health

Will someday Dominican health care become preventive health care and not disease management? A story in Hoy is encouraging. Health reporter Altagracia Ortiz says that the authorities in Montecristi are concerned with the high incidence of hypertension and diabetes and have begun to encourage lifestyle changes with the backing of the Ministry of Public Health and the First Lady.

As reported, a recent diagnosis by the Ministry of Health of reasons for people getting sick prematurely in Montecristi has prompted the Ministry of Health to promote educational and sports activities.

The Ministry of Public Health seeks to establish healthy lifestyles among the residents of the municipality and surrounding areas in Montecristi in the northwest.

The authorities are proposing a “Health Route: “change your lifestyle.” Public Health Minister Daniel Rivera and First Lady of the Republic Raquel Arbaje are leading the activity, together with various public and private institutions in the area.

The population is motivated to eat a balanced diet, lots of fruits and vegetables, foods low in salt and sugar, exercise, and be aware of their medical check-ups to prevent and control diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.

Minister Daniel Rivera called on the population to consume produce harvested here and make adjustments to change lifestyles, discarding smoking and excesses in consumption of alcohol.

“Diabetes and hypertension are the main causes of death in the country, however they are preventable diseases,” says Dr. Rivera. He urged people to exercise, for example, to walk an hour daily and consume the fruits and vegetables that are available at low prices and at any time of the year in the Dominican Republic.
