The Central Electoral Board (JCE) has ordered political parties to respect the limits on campaigning before the electoral campaigns are officially opened. Now, former President Danilo Medina has found a way to be a trending topic in the press, radio and TV talk shows, and social media.
He is making outlandish and absurd remarks that have been making front page headlines, Twitter, Facebook, and Whatsapp. After keeping mute for more than a year once leaving the Presidency, Medina got enthused when the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) candidate won the position of president of the powerful public school teachers union (ADP). He then dropped the first “bomb”. He stated the former ruling party, the PLD was not dead, it was out partying (“No estaba muerto, estaba de parranda”).
And then this Sunday, 24 October 2021, the former President launched another comment and became the talk of the town. This time he said that the reason why the PLD lost the 2020 presidential election was that life was too good (“la gente se cansó del bienestar”).
A brother and sister of Medina, and two brother in laws, are in jail awaiting trial for major corruption during the Medina administration.
