Participación Ciudadana calls for investigation into senatorial use of social compensation fund

Leidy Blanco García, coordinator of the Participación Ciudadana, a civic watchdog organization, criticized the “discretional and corrupt way” the Social Compensation Fund is used by many senators and said that the fund distorts the legislators’ role.

Blanco García made the remarks commenting on the “El Informe con Alicia Ortega” that looked into the use of the almost RD$300 million senators’ Social Compensation Fund (“El Barrilito”).

Blanco García says the findings by journalist Alicia Ortega could be evidence of “criminal embezzlement.” The investigation provided evidence of funds that were assigned to persons that did not receive the money. The investigation did not look into who had actually received the funds. It also revealed millions were paid to companies owned or with close ties to the senators, and millions in payments without support documents or with support documents that violated the law.

Blanco García called for greater controls and for a regime of consequences.
