President Luis Abinader announced he would address the nation on Wednesday, 27 October 2021 at 7pm. The presidential speech will coincide with the opening of the Dominican Winter Baseball League Championship in three ballparks nationwide at the same time.
Administrative Minister of the Presidency Jose Ignacio Paliza said that the President will speak on fiscal reform as debated by the Economic and Social Council (CES).
In addition to fiscal reform (=more taxes) and the 2022 National Budget, other hot topics are the Haitian crisis, and the National Police and crime.
This week the senate passed a first reading on a bill that would eliminate all tax exemptions to make available public funds for capital investments. The ruling PRM party has a majority in the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies but the Senate bill is evidence of a rift in the relations between legislators and the Presidency.
This is the fifth presidential address since Abinader took office on 16 August 2020.
