Faride Raful says initiative to eliminate vehicle exonerations was not presented to the three senators that did not sign the draft

Senator Faride Raful (PRM-National District) says she was not included in the discussions that led to the drafting of a bill to eliminate exonerations and other privileges enjoyed by the legislators. She said her colleagues, the president of the Senate, Eduardo Estrella and Antonio Taveras (PRM-Santo Domingo), were also not sent the bill for signing on. The bill was signed by 29 other senators. The bill extends the elimination of vehicle exemptions to others in government, among other measures proposed to reduce government spending.

Raful, Estrella and Taveras are the only three senators that have reneged on receiving the monthly allotments for the Social Compensation Fund and the two unlimited vehicle tax exemptions per term. Recent investigative reports in Diario Libre and El Informe con Alicia Ortega with clear evidence these perks result in major corruption and violations of the law on behalf of the legislators.

Raful said once the bill is submitted, it would be studied in the Finance Committee.

Raful stressed the bill had not been formally deposited in the Senate and is but a draft proposal.

Raful said: “We are working on an institutional reform to eliminate this (the Social Compensation Fund) and to organize and make the internal processes efficient,” she said.
