Calm at the border, women and children enter

The Army has sent a new large contingent of soldiers, including special commands equipped with all terrain vehicles and helicopters, to the security of the border with Haiti. General commander of the Army, Major General Julio Ernesto Florián Pérez said the surveillance covers the entire border area, from Montecristi on the north to Pedernales on the south. The soldiers are on the alert especially for armed gangs that may attempt to enter the country.

The members of the specialized teams Cazadores de Constanza, Macheteros de Mao, tactical G2 intelligence unit were sent to the border last week. The teams are supervised by Colonel German Rosario Perez.

The military’s mission is to protect the nation from the incidents that occur on the other side of the border with neighboring Haiti.

The work of the military has also resulted in the arrest of several undocumented persons and the seizure of merchandise.

Ines Aizpun in an editorial on 1 November 2021 sums up what is known about Haiti – gangs control the country. She explains these received money from the government, the opposition and the business people who all believed they were buying their own security. Rape is a common occurrence in Haiti. There is a mass migration of women and children. Aizpun says the deportation of these would present a serious public relations problem for the Dominican Republic.

On the other hand, very few of the Haitians that enter for market days and illegally are vaccinated for Covid. Haiti is reported having 23,960 confirmed cases and 671 deaths, as per the 30 October 2021 global epidemiological deadline. Haiti has only just begun to start its Covid-19 vaccination program and of a population of around 11 million people only 35,592 people are fully vaccinated (2 doses) as of the 25 October 2021 data update.
