At the Santo Domingo Institute of Technology (INTEC) on 27 October 2021, experts from the World Bank and the university outlined what the Dominican Republic needs to do to maintain economic stability and continued growth. The report discussion is featured on the YouTube channel of the university.
The international institution says that Dominican Republic needs to reestablish the sustainability of the debt; simplify the tax system; strengthen the social programs and improve water and sanitation services. Regarding this last issue, the experts note that 86% of the population does not have a steady water supply, which creates added costs such as the need to build cisterns and buy water tanks. While the World Bank officers had praise for the Abinader government efforts to reduce poverty, the officers noted that there continue to be important gaps and inefficiencies. The issues surrounding the problems facing the electricity sector are considered to be fundamental.
