BHD Leon Bank women’s awards

The BHD Leon Bank announced the winners of its annual contest, “Women Who Change the World Award.” The prize recognizes the life path and social causes of women in the Dominican Republic. It is in its sixth year.

Dr. Daisy Acosta, a geriatrician and psychiatrist, won first place for her work as a scientific researcher and creator of the country’s first National Brain Bank. She is also recognized as past president of the World Alzheimer’s Association, an organization that granted her the honorary vice-president in perpetuity. She received a RD$1 million cash prize.

Vice President Raquel Peña, First Lady Raquel Arbaje and Minister of Women Mayra Jiménez were present for the ceremony held at the Hotel El Embajador on 2 November 2021. The awards were delivered by Luis Molina Achécar, president of BHD León and Steven Puig, executive president of Banco BHD Leon.

“This celebration has a double meaning: one is to recognize the courage of women who change the world, because not even a pandemic stops them, and the other is to highlight that our Dominican Republic has women who strive and work for the common good. Today we are going to recognize eleven of them,” said Steven Puig, executive president of Banco BHD León.

More than 100 applications were submitted to the BHD León. In addition to Daisy Acosta, the bank also gave awards to Evelyn Peniche, Jalenny Martínez, Liquedia Ventura, Margarita Mayer, María Cáceres (Chachy), María Peralta (Mamá Chicha), María Trinidad Ayala (Sister Trini) and Ramona Ureña (Quina).

The jurors were Claudia Catrain, specialist in corporate social responsibility; Huchi Lora, journalist; María Amalia León, executive director of the Eduardo León Jimenes Foundation; Mercedes Ramos, president of the Ramos Group; Oscar Villanueva, president of the Fundación Quiéreme Como Soy; Soledad Álvarez, philologist and poet, and Steven Puig, president of the jury and executive president of Banco BHD León.
