
Dominican boxer Alexis de la Cruz will match Sofiane Oumiha of France for the gold medal and US$100,000 cash prize in the 2021 Aiba Men’s World Championships on 4 November 2021.
Previously he had secured a silver medal at the 2021 Aiba Men’s World Championships. He defeated Finnish fighter Arslan Khataev by split decision 4-1 at the Stark Arena in Belgrade, Serbia. De la Cruz competes in the lightweight 60 kg category.
Previously, for the bronze medal he had defeated Kenya Olympian Nicholas “Commander” Okoth who surrendered 5-0 at the Stark Arena in Belgrade, Serbia on 3 November 2021.
The 2021 AIBA World Boxing Championships are being held in Belgrade, Serbia from 25 October to 6 November.
For the first time in AIBA’s 75-year history, medal winners are awarded prize money; gold medallists earn $100,000, silver medallists $50,000, and bronze medallists $25,000. The overall prize fund of the championship is worth $2.6 million.
De la Cruz’s performance has been extraordinary for the Dominican Republic that had not medalled in the competition in the past 20 years.
