Dominican Menina is on exhibit in Madrid

National District Mayor Carolina Mejia and Dominican ambassador to Spain Juan Bolívar Díaz celebrated the Dominican Menina now on display in Madrid from 3 November 2021 to mid December 2021.

The Dominican Menina, “Dominican Faces,” joins the many 2-meter statues from all around the world inspired by the masterpiece “Las Meninas” by the Spanish Golden Age painter Diego Velasquez. The female statues are installed in the busiest corners of the city in a variety of designs.

Isabella Fernandez, who is responsible for the Dominican Republic country brand, designed the menina. She explains the work of art renders tribute to the diversity of races that make up the Dominican nationality. As part of the costume, there are illustrations of outstanding Dominican personalities – such as Japan Olympic two-time silver medal-winner Marileidy Paulino, singers Juan Luis Guerra and Sergio Vargas, and the late fashion designer Jenny Polanco, and the Mirabal sisters, among others.

“Among the faces, you will be able to discover people who represent us,” she explains. “We are the cradle of great athletes. We are the country that makes the hips of the world move; we are the people who grow the best tobacco in the world and where the cacao that becomes the most delicious chocolate originates. We are millions of people who bring a unique joy and energy to the world. `Dominican Faces’ seeks for you to know them all and discover all the potential that our half Caribbean island has”, says Isabella Fernandez.

This exhibition is organized by Meninas Madrid Gallery. The Dominican Menina is on display until mid-December at Serrano and Goya streets, in the emblematic Plaza Colon corner.
