Deputies to review electoral laws in 2022

Elías Wessin Chávez, who presides the Permanent Committee on Central Electoral Board (JCE) matters of the Chamber of Deputies, ruled out that in this legislature deputies will look into the amendments to the electoral laws requested by the Central Electoral Board president, Román Jáquez. Among the recommendations is removing the obligation for the JCE to carry out the primaries of the political parties and other articles of the Electoral Regime (Law 15-19) and Political Parties (Law 33-18) laws

On 10 November 2021, Jaquez said the time is running out to approve the amendments needed in time for the organization of the 2024 general elections. Yet, Wessin Chavez says the bill will be reviewed in the first semester of 2022.

The spokesman for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) bloc, Julito Fulcar, said that these laws need to be strengthened. “But it seems to me that we are still in time to produce that reform,” he said.

Following the passing of the political parties and electoral regime laws more than twelve articles had to be annulled or amended by the Constitutional Court (TC) and the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) as these were contested during the development of political activities for the general elections held in 2020.
