President Abinader at the inauguration of the Haina Port grain terminal

President Luis Abinader was present for the inauguration of the country’s first grain port terminal in Haina. Terminal Granelera del Caribe SRL (Tegra), the terminal company, says it has invested US$40 million to build the facility that is located on the western side of the Port of Haina. The terminal provides unloading services to bulk vessels and incorporates an additional 18,000 tons of storage with the construction of seven new silos for 140,000 tons.

Tegra is the first Agri-Food Terminal and Industrial Park in the country, consisting of the port terminal, a mechanized unloading system, silos and warehouses, two animal feed manufacturing plants, two soybean extrusion plants and a fertilizer plant.

Tegra’s infrastructure covers an area of 173,000 square meters, where up to the 140,000 tons of raw materials are stored and some 500,000 tons are moved per year.

Tegra’s president, Miguel Lajara, highlighted that the importance of the port facilities for the country’s food security.

President Luis Abinader called the port terminal an innovative and strategic investment for the agricultural sector.

The terminal has a mechanized direct unloading system for grains from the ship to the silos and warehouses, at a speed of 600 tons per hour, operating in a continuous one-day process that reduces the time ships spend in port. It also has 2 liquid unloading lines with a combined capacity of 300 tons per hour for vegetable oils and fats.

Tegra operates five production plants, two of which manufacture animal feed, with a combined capacity of 75 tons/hour. Two soybean extruders with a combined capacity of 20 tons/hour, the only ones serving the entire country, and one for fertilizer production.

As reported by the company, in total, the dispatch capacity from the production and storage plants is around 1,500 mt/day, including grains, flours, balanced feed, bagged granular products and liquids.

The company reports that the consumption of raw material for the Dominican agricultural sector is around 1.8 million metric tons per year, of which Tegra mobilizes around 560,000 tons of corn, 250,000 tons of soybeans and 25,000 tons of liquids, representing 40% of the national total.

“This fact not only means development for the Port of Haina, but also unites us in the purpose of opening more opportunities for competition in international markets and to firmly embrace the objective as a country, to be the logistics HUB of the Caribbean,” said Jean Luis Rodriguez, executive director of the Dominican Port Authority (Apordom), when speaking at the event.
