2022 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championships to take place in Dominican Republic

The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) announced that the Dominican Republic will host the 2022 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship [CWU20] and 2022 Concacaf Women’s U-17 Championship [CWU17]. The hosting is important to continue promoting the sport in the Dominican Republic.

The World Cup Qualifying competitions will take place from 25 February to 12 March and 23 April to 8 May 2022.
“The CWU20 and CWU17 Championships will each be disputed in two rounds, beginning with a 16-team group stage. After round-robin play, the top three teams in each group will advance to the knockout stage [joining the four best teams from their respective qualifiers].

“The knockout stage of the competitions [round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, third-place match and final] will all be played in a single match direct elimination format.

“After the events, the champions, runners-up and third place finishers will qualify for the 2022 FIFA Women’s U-20 and U-17 World Cups.

Participating teams in the CWU20 are: Bermuda, Canada, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Curaçao, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and USA.

“FIFA World Cup: The 2022 FIFA Women’s U-20 World Cup is scheduled to take place in August of 2022, in Costa Rica. In total, 4 teams from the region will participate [Costa Rica, as the host nation and the winner, runner-up and third-place finisher]. The United States is the current champion [sixth title overall] of the CWU20 after defeating Mexico 4-1 in the 2020 Final.

“Participating teams in the U17 are: Bermuda, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, Curaçao, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago and USA.

“FIFA World Cup: The 2022 FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup is scheduled to take place in October 2022, in India. In total, 3 teams from the region will participate [winner, runner-up and third-place finisher].

Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic men’s youth team is also battling to position itself as a regional powerhouse team.
