Former Vice President Margarita Cedeño congratulated President-elect of Honduras, Xiomara Castro. 66-year old Castro is the would-be winner of the Sunday, 29 November 2021 presidential election. Castro was First Lady of Honduras during the 2006-2009 government of former President Jose Manuel Zelaya Rosales. That government ended with a coup.
“I wholeheartedly congratulate my sister and friend Xiomara Castro, President-elect of Honduras. It is a deserved and historic triumph. Your years of struggle with your people are crowned with a great victory,” Cedeño tweeted.
Cedeño says Castro is paving the way for more women politicians. “With you we all arrive,” wrote Cedeño.
She expressed confidence that Castro would do an excellent job in favor of all Honduras. “We are not before a political phenomenon product of chance, but that women have understood that solid leadership is consolidated through professional and technical training and equal work,” she tweeted.
Cedeño noted that a look at the enrollment of universities in the Dominican Republic and other Latin American nations reveals that most of the students are young women who see education as the way to advance in all areas of life.
“In the coming years we will have women governing in the nations of the region, since there are solid leaderships in the political groups and social movements,” Cedeño forecasts.
Cedeño has aspired to be the candidate for the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) on several occasions. She was First Lady during the governments of Leonel Fernandez (2004-2008, 2008-2012).
Cedeño aspired to the presidential candidacy in 2012 and 2016 on the then ruling PLD party ticket. Instead, she was chosen to be the running mate of former President Danilo Medina and became a two-term Vice President of the Republic (2012-2016 and 2016-2020).
A lawyer, Cedeño did not formally announce her divorce to Leonel Fernandez until 2021.
She aspires to be the PLD presidential candidate in the 2024 presidential elections.
