Claro announces 5G network is now available; starts in Greater Santo Domingo

Claro announced the deployment of the first phase of the 5G network in the Dominican Republic in Greater Santo Domingo, from Villa Mella to the Colonial City.

Claro says the service is now available in 29 sectors in the National District and in areas of northern Santo Domingo province. These are: Bella Vista, Centro Olímpico, Ciudad Colonial, Ciudad Nueva, Don Bosco, Ensanche La Fe, Ensanche Naco, Ensanche Quisqueya, Gazcue, Jardín Botánico, Julieta Morales, La Agustina, La Esperilla, La Julia, Los Jardines, Los Millones, Los Prados, Mata Hambre, Nuestra Señora de la Paz, Paraíso, Piantini, San Carlos, Viejo Arroyo Hondo, Villa Consuelo, El Edén, Guaricano, Sabana Perdida, Santa Cruz andVilla Mella.
Coverage will be extended to the rest of Greater Santo Domingo next, and then to Santiago and La Romana provinces.

The greater data speeds will initially be available for Android mobiles and require a Claro 5G mobile plan and a SIM Card 4G LTE. The company says Apple’s Iphones will get access to the platform as of February 2022.

Rogelio Viesca, Claro’s outgoing president, and Carlos Cueto, the recently appointed general director and CEO of the company, visited President Luis Abinader on 2 December for the official launching of the 5G mobile service.

Nelson Arroyo, president of the board of directors of the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel); Juan Pablo Romero and Omar Acosta, vice presidents of Engineering & Network Operations and Marketing & Corporate Communications, for Claro Dominicana also met with President Luis Abinader for the official launching.

“With this infrastructure already available in the National District, we are ushering in a new era of digital transformation in the country and enabling fifth-generation mobile connectivity, which will make it possible to materialize the 2030 digital agenda of the current government, by serving as a platform for developing a digital society that promotes creativity and innovation, improving the quality of life of Dominicans,” said Viesca.

Carlos Cueto highlighted that plans and equipment are already available that will allow customers to enjoy Claro’s 5G coverage in this first phase of deployment.

5G increases cellular bandwitdth by huge amounts and is described as the new standard for cellular networks and a game changer. It is expected to enable faster, more stable and more secure connectivity. It ushers in the era of The Internet of Things (IoT). The promise is that 5G will spur innovation across many industries and provide a platform enabling emergent technologies to become an integral part of our economy and lifestyles with a major impact on industry, transport and health care.
