Government launches Public-Private Trust Fund for the Co-Management of Solid Waste

President Luis Abinader announced a RD$13 billion Public-Private Trust Fund for the Comprehensive Management of Solid Waste during a presentation at the Presidential Palace. The trust is mandated in Solid Wastes Law 225-20. City governments handle 7.3 million tons of garbage, according to the Dominican Municipal League that groups the Dominican municipalities.

President Abinader explains that the trust will allot funds for the construction and readjustment of final disposal sites that meet optimal standards to mitigate the effects against the environment and consequently guarantee the population’s health.

“We always act in the same way; we analyze, study, propose and execute. Our country inherits many problems, but they all have a solution if a political will exists to overcome them. And that is our purpose. This government seeks solutions. This government fixes problems,” said Abinader.

He said the government has carried out an inventory of solid waste collection centers to regularize those informally operating. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is assisting the government. The Ministry of Environment is preparing the National Plan for the Comprehensive Management of Solid Wastes.

Armando Paíno Henríquez D. is named the first executive director of the Public-Private Trust for the Comprehensive Management of Solid Waste. Paíno Henríquez explained during the presentation that 20 project initiatives presented by the Trust’s Board are scheduled to be executed from 2022 to 2023. These actions are expected to solve 40% of the nationwide solid waste problem and at the same time generate 16,000 direct jobs and 4,000 indirect jobs in technical and operational areas, boosting the local economy.
