
A cave-in early on Tuesday morning, 7 December 2021, at the copper and zinc extraction mine located in the Cerros de Maimon in Monseñor Nouel province has caused the death of one person, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy and Mines confirmed to Diario Libre.
The deposit is exploited by Corporación Minera Dominicana (Cormidom).
Diario Libre reports on the death of at least five mining workers over the past two years. Geologist Osiris de Leon geologist says the deaths mostly affect those working informal mines, but that deaths, such as that of miner Jose Manuel Fernandez Martinez at the Cormidom mine, but also affect those working in formal mining operations.
The death of the miner comes at a time when the government has announced it has hired a Spanish public relations firm to improve the reputation of mining among Dominicans.
