
Dominican expats are the best. The Central Bank reports that so far this year they have sent home US$9.46 billion. This is up US$2.11 billion when compared to the same period of January to November in 2020. What is most impressive is that the remittances for the first 11 months of the year are 47.1% more than they were for the same time period in the pre-pandemic 2019.
Remittances in November 2021 were US$79.1 million more than the record that was set in November 2020 of US$786.6 million. In 2020, remittances were US$229.5 million more or an additional 41.2 compared to those in November 2019.
Expats in the United States are driving the overall increases in remittances. 84% of remittances comes from the United States. Expats in Spain send back the second largest amounts, with 7% of the total.
Central Bank statistics indicate most of the recipients of the remittances live in the National District (33.4%), Santiago (14.0%), Santo Domingo province (8.9%), Duarte-San Francisco de Macorís (5.5%), La Vega (3.9%), Peravia (3.3%) and Puerto Plata (3.1%).
