The Licey Tigers had been trailing, spending more time in the fifth and sixth positions for weeks in the Dominican Winter Professional Baseball Championship. But as of December 2021, with only seven games to go, the Licey Tigers team is looking like it may make the cut when the last regular season game is played on Friday, 17 December 2021. The top four teams will then play a short series to decide the playoff teams.
Meanwhile, nothing is decided. The first five teams are separated by at most two games. The standing so far is:
Estrellas Orientales and the Aguilas Cibaeñas tied for first place with 18 wins and 15 losses. Tigres del Licey and Gigantes tied in second place with 17 wins and 16 losses, behind by just one game. The Leones del Escogido are 16-17, two games behind.
The Toros del Este technically could still make the cut as the team is 13-20, five games behind first place, but just three games behind the critical fourth place.
In reporting for N Digital, Joel Suriel says this is the most tightly battled season in years. He reminds readers that the Leones del Escogido team has not won since 2016, after winning four hcampionships in just eight years. The Tigres and the Aguilas seek to break the tie of 22 pennants. The Gigantes del Cibao wants its second title. The win would be the third for the Toros del Este. The Estrellas seek to revalidate their 2019 win, which they won after 50 years of making second or less in the league.
