Dominicans among victims of accident in Mexico

A freight trailer carrying an estimated 166 migrants suffered a terrible accident in the south of Mexico last week, and now it has been announced that there were at least five Dominicans on that truck, including one among the 55 who died. The deceased was identified as 23-year old Yuniel Morban because of his tattoos. Reportedly, he is from El Cañafistol near Baní, Peravia. Relatives say he paid RD$1.3 million to the smugglers, as reported in Noticias SIN.

As a result of the accident, the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Relations is attempting to provide assistance to the victims and the deceased’s family.

According to the latest reports, two Dominican survivors are in serious condition at a primary care hospital in the village of Barriozábal in the state of Chiapas, in the south of Mexico, on the road from Chiapas to the north. The Dominican authorities have identified Luis Mercedes Avalo Peguero, 41, who suffered a broken knee, but the other victim, Rafael Martinez Castillo suffered severe head wounds and his status is listed as critical.

Reports are that there are at least two more Dominicans in the failed attempt to reach the United States.
